Favourites

Ok, so the other day I saw the best movie.

"Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind"

What a fantastic movie! And it ends properly, it's not too long, I really enjoyed it. I would even consider owning it.

And it has the added bonus in that it gave me my new favourite song:

"Light and Day" by The Polyphonic Spree

Yay!

Well, I'm off to replace the speakers that were stolen from my car!

Cheers!

Amendment

So, right after I wrote my post this morning, Janice generously let me go home.

So I was only up until 5am.

Whop-di-doo!

Here I sit...

So here I am. It's 4:15 in the morning, and I am stuck in the middle of an audit shift at the hotel. Well, not exactly stuck, I chose to train tonight. But the audit is done, so I get to sit herre with my colleague Janice until 8:30 this morning.

My mind is really screwed up. I can't recall the last time I stayed up as late as this shift demands. The good news is though that this is my last training day, and I am now on the schedule as an 'independant.' It makes me feel smart.

Anyways, I gotta jet for now, but have a good day, night, morning... what tme is it?

I survived!

I did it! I made it through a night audit shift at the hotel this morning. 12:30-2:45am. It went alot faster than last time, which took until 5:00am. Probably because I was actually contributing, instead of just watching, which made things go much faster. Because I am just that good.

Yes. Yes I am.

I don't know what I think of the night shift thing. On Wednesday I was dead to the world for most of the day from working the night audit, and I ended up skipping about half of my night class outy of exhaustion. But today, I was out of bed at about 10am, and am pretty with it. I will probably have a nap before I drive down to Victoria this afternoon, but all in all I am felling pretty good. We'll see, I'll just have to take it as it comes.

I went out for lunch yesterday with Chloe. Actually, she treated me. What a sweetheart. We had a really great chat, over burgers at White Spot. You know when you have one of those cravings for a big, disgusting, juicy burger? Well, we were both in that mood, and we both left sufficiently satisfied.

I spent WAY to much time at the mall yesterday with Chloe, Liz and Chris. Liz needed glasses, Chloe needed luggage to reduce her gongshow-ness while travelling, and I was looking for bedding for my new bed, which arrives on Monday.

I also have been spending way to much money on music lately. I have discovered iTunes, Apple's answer to Media Player. The built in Music Store is evil, constantly suggesting music for me to purchase, and it turns out that it is exactly something I like. Currently, I am addicted to Franz Ferdinand.

Anyways, I gotta go work on my Media Studies stuff, so I'm out for now.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Dead tired

I know now what it is like to work a Graveyard shift. I just worked 12:30am - 5am this morning, I get to do the same thing tonight, and on Saturday night I get to do it again, except it is 12:30am to 8:30am, and I have to work until 5pm at the Gardens that night.

Ugh.

'Tis the life of a student with multiple jobs.

Nanaimo can...

KISS MY ASS!

Everytime I have something nice happen to me, or do something nice, Nanaimo finds a way to put a damper on things.

My car got broken into last night, again! And this time, they took some stuff. It looks like I am missing some CDs, and they took the speakers for my stereo out of my trunk. They ripped half the carpet up in the front passenger seat, did the same in the trunk, tried to steal the stereo itself, damaged the lock on the driver's door, and then (this is my favourite) they changed their socks in my car! Yes, I really did mean to type "socks."

But at least they didn't break the window. But for fucks sake, stay the fuck away from my car! My sister, her husband and I have been living here since May 2003, and collectively our cars have been broken into 5 times!

Stealing my speakers really bothers me! I have a miserable drive twice a week between here and Victoria, and music is integral to making that drive bearable. And now all I have are the shitty Honda-standard speakers in the front, one of which is blown, so now my music sounds like crap.

So I bought an alarm system, and it stopped working after one try. So now I have to go to all the way to Walmart and return it. And the microwave broke, so I need to buy a new one. And the rent is due, and the cell phone bill is $100, and the $200 charge on my VISA for a product I ordered online still hasn't been returned, even though they received the package back a month ago. AAAAAAAAGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

I can't wait to escape this city, it's shitty weather, shitty traffic, shitty roads, shitty smells (the city smelled like ass-rot last week), shitty restaurants, and just its general shittyness.

Kiss my ass Nanaimo!

Thank you for calling...

..the Best Western North Gate Inn.

My NEW job! YAY! I just got hired today, and I have already started training.

How exciting!

Rain!

Man, we are getting a lot of rain up here! I know the Lower Mainland has it worse, but my goodness!

I went to a movie last night with Chloe and Jessica, and had a great time. We went to see "In Good Company" with Dennis Quaid, and the dude from "That 70's Show" (Topher Grace?). The movie was ok, but I couldn't help inserting "DUMBASS!" in a couple of sequences (in my head of course).

Anyways, a great time had by all!

Not much

I feel like I am getting further and further remiss with my blog. It's not that I don't like writing. It's just that pretty much nothing remarkable has happened to me in the last little while.

Well, that isn't completely true.

On Friday, I went out for dinner and rented a movie with my good friend Samara, and had a really good time. Sometimes it is just good to curl up with a funny movie (Shrek 2) with a good friend and laugh yourself silly.

And today, I have a job interview at 1:00pm. It's perfect! I have applied at a Best Western Hotel up here, they are hiring a Front Desk Clerk part-time, which is exactly what I need. It's only 16-24 hours each week, and that is all I need. I just find that since 2 of my three courses are completely online and don't require me to be at the college, I have way too much time. Adding some time pressure will help me keep on track.

And working at a hotel is something that I have always wanted to do. And it also carries some responsibility. So here's to hoping that I have a job at the end of the day.

So there. All I had to was start writing, and I realized that the mundane can be good and just as much fun as the incredibly exciting.

Does that make sense?

And I'm out.

Snow bank thanks

To Chloe, Jessica, and the dude with the Big Truck,

Thanks for helping me get my car out of the snowbank that I "intentionally" drove into.

And yes, a special thanks to Meiko the cat for sacrificing some unused kitty litter to the cause.

Snow, snow slush, and.. oh look! More snow!

Man, what a lot of snow!

I went to work on Friday, which was pretty treacherous and I barely made alive. The drive usually takes 20 minutes, and it took me an hour to get there. Once I got there, I punched in. But then I had to go on a hike to the greenhouses to make sure that a display had not been damaged. Of course I didn't wear my snowboots that day. So I discovered that the soles of my shoes were cracked, so I had cold, wet feet all day.

Then the power went out, and we switched to generators. It was like Star Trek; you know, the lights dimmed, some stuff started beeping, and then the lights were on full power. Well, at that point, the snow was coming down pretty hard so my co-workers decided to leave early. Except we couldn't leave. It turns out that the power failure was caused by a tree falling across the road. The only road out of the Gardens. The tree fell on the power line, then the tree caught fire, and the whole ensemble fell on the road. So there we were, 'trapped' and on backup generators. We finally got to leave, but I had to go downtown to pick up my sister, and of course buy new shoes.

I went to work on Saturday, and I had to conduct a fam tour. And the roads were still shitty. And I left early again.

But my feet were dry!

Have a great week everyone!

"If you see a hill, don't go up it"

That is a direct quote from Sarah Daniels, the Traffic Reporter on Global's Morning News. Apparently the traffic in Vancouver is just stupid this morning because of the snow. But I don't understand.

Growing up on the west coast, I never have had much experience driving in the snow. But I do know one thing; Go cautiously and keep your speed low enough that your steering wheel still works. What I don't understand is the absolute mayhem that snow causes out here. People still trying to push the speed limit. Geez folks, leave a few extra minutes to get where you are going safely.

Now I have to drive down to Victoria this afternoon with my sister, and we will be going very cautiously. But I'm not worried about the roads. I am worried about the other drivers. The Island Highway has a concrete divider almost the entire way there, except on the Malahat, which is by far the most trecherous portion of the drive. Luckily, we can take the Mill Bay Ferry. It costs money, but I would rather do that then have some idiot cross the yellow line and smack into us.

But enough about driving. Here I sit in my apartment, with a cup of coffee, watching the snow fall outside and listening to a mix of Norah Jones/Sarah Harmer. My online courses are down right now, so all I can do is curl up with my novel for English (The Shipping News) and sip my coffee.

Not too bad, eh?

Have a great weekend everyone. I start my new job at the Gardens tomorrow, and I am looking forward to it a lot. Group Services, here I come!

What you doin' tonight, hey boy?

Answer, not much.

Class has begun. Having re-established myself in Nanaimo, I have a busy day ahead of me:

1. Clean room.
2. Do laundry.
3. Check out my web-based courses.
4. Brave the crowds at the Bookstore.
5. Check out the new library.
6. Go to the bank.
7. Buy Kraft Dinner.
8. Hook-up with Chloe.

Which means I can't stay on Blogger too long.

It's a beautiful day, the sun is shining, it's sub-zero outside, and I feel like accomplishing things today!

All the best for the new year

The New Year is here, so Happy New Year everyone! I spent the evening rather quietly; I worked till 10pm, then went home and relaxed by the fire with the dog. The parents came back from dinner, and we all toasted the new year in with a glass of champagne. Pretty quiet, all in all.

But with the new year comes a new semester, and I must go and pack for the trip back up the island.

Here's to a great second semester and a prosperous new year.
